Continuing my quest to Junkyard upfit and Junkyard restore my 2007 Dodge Ram, I spent Saturday at Self Service Junkyards, I scored a set of Factory 20 inch sport wheels, misc missing interior trim pieces and a few other odds and ends. I ended my day at the Atlanta East Pull A Part. Where I spotted this rare look into luxury.

Kinja'd!!!

For those who don’t know these built in Italy on a K Car Platform they made just over 7,000 between 89-91. These were an answer to a Question nobody asked. These stickere d for around $ 35,000 in 1990 or around $67,000 in today’s money. They cost about h alf of the all new for 1990 Mercedes 300 SL, they are the same right?

Kinja'd!!!

Unparalleled Italian Luxury, rich leather that has held up remarkably well

Kinja'd!!!

Fewer than 85,000 miles when this fine automobile probably lost its transmission or the Turbo II intercooled engine gave up

Kinja'd!!!

The condition of the engine leads me to believe the transmission made it end its life here. Shockingly the hood struts still worked, they must have been Italian rather than Chrysler.

Kinja'd!!!

When you see a perfect Maserati Pentastar Grill in the Junkyard you b uy it for g arage a rt.

Is that a fire damaged charger or a really shitty fade to white paint job?

It was some kind of wrap.

Some one should rescue that car. It’s not really special, but it’s all there, except the grill, and could just need a trans that would cost what 2 00 bucks?

When I was a kid I’d see a Maserati when we went to the lake and I thought it was amazing that some in my relatively poor town could afford one. A few years ago I realized it was probably one of these.

Yeah, start looking up how much parts go for that. That grille might be worth a lot of money. You could make a decent amount of money from reselling.

Honestly ther is not much of a restoration market for these things.

I’m gonna guess it was the tranny, the 2.2 is a stout little motor.

Also, 80s-early 90s Chrysler leather is my favorite car  leather.

Yeah, but people are silly. I knew a guy that had one, he actually had two and made one good one. The parts are hard to come by and there are people who are die hard fans of them.

That looks like an excellent candidate for Longvoyager to resurrect. Assuming it didn’t end out there due to some TC specific electrical issue he could probably have it running in a weekend.

Going to be blown HG, took out the internals.

The Turbo Transmissions were usually pretty stout, the TII’s HG, not so much.

Going to bet HG. The 2.5L Turbo ( aka TII which is powering this car ) is notorious for HG issues and heads cracking.

The Turbo trans on the other hand is quite stout.

Doubtful it’s a trans issue, the Turbo transmissions were quite stout. The TII’s were notorious for HG failure and head cracking though, which given the mileage, I would bet that killed it.

I’ll defer to your knowledge I just remember the late 80s vans eating their transmissions around the 90k mark.

I did lose a head gasket in a T1 2.5/auto Shadow ES, so seems legit.

Didn’t they also like to eat timing belts? Or was that the turbo 1

The TIII motors had timing belt issues, due to a poor tensioner design. There is an updated design that does away with the issues.

Mostly V6 models.

Mainly due to lack of proper maintenance, most of those 90k transmissions had never been serviced, at which they should have been serviced at least 3 times in 90k. The other issue was mechanics using the wrong fluid when they were serviced, which killed them in short order.

Damn! I want that grill. I got one from the only Lancia I’ve seen in my life.
